LANXESS participates in Water Today 2018 – February 8 - 10, 2018 in Chennai

Chennai (TGN) –The LANXESS booth at this year’s Water Today’s Water Expo (February 8 to 10, 2018) focuses on the company's integrated expertise and longstanding experience in water treatment. The specialty chemicals company offers Lewatit brand ion exchange resins, Lewabrane membrane elements for reverse osmosis and Bayoxide iron oxide adsorbers.

“Membrane technology and ion exchange complement each other perfectly and are used by many of our customers in tandem. At Water Expo, we will showcase our expertise as an experienced one-stop supplier for all water treatment requirements in the growing Indian water market,” says Mr. Prakash Shanmugam, GM & Head of Business Unit – Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT) in India. One well-known example is the efficient purification of feedwater for water/steam cycles in power plants. Further groundbreaking examples are also becoming increasingly important, such as the effluent-free treatment of dye mill wastewater (zero liquid discharge) or the removal of critical organic pollutants (micropollutants) in wastewater treatment.

A number of new developments
LANXESS addresses the current challenges in water treatment with a range of new developments. These include energy-efficient membrane elements from the Lewabrane RO ULP line (Reverse Osmosis – Ultra Low Pressure), Lewatit NM 3367 mixed bed ion exchange resin for desalination and Lewatit TP 107 selective ion exchange resin with high Cr(VI) binding capacity. LewaPlus design software now features a module for innovative reverse osmosis technology.

“As a globally leading supplier of products and solutions for water treatment and purification, we support our customers in managing scarce water resources efficiently and sustainably. Our products meet the highest international production and quality standards,” adds Prakash.

Energy efficiency trumps all
New to the LANXESS booth are the membrane elements from the Lewabrane RO ULP line, which are equally suited to treating drinking water and wastewater. They are designed for a test pressure of just 7.6 bar, meaning the pressure vessel can operate at 40 percent lower operating pressure, resulting in lower energy and operating costs compared to standard elements. Due to its higher water permeability and corresponding high flow rates, investment costs can also be lowered at the same time.

The ULP membrane elements are set apart by a highly hydrophilic membrane surface and uniform membrane overflow as a result of the alternating strand design (ASD) feed spacers. Both factors serve to reduce organic fouling, further reducing operating costs, as fewer cleaning chemicals are required and cleaning intervals can be extended.

The new membrane elements are produced at the Bitterfeld site, where LANXESS doubled its membrane capacity in mid-2017 in response to growing demand.

Selective and efficient removal of chromium(VI)

The new, selective Lewatit TP 107 ion exchange resin was developed specifically for municipal drinking water treatment facilities and is certified to NSF/ANSI standard 61. Lewatit TP 107 also offers key advantages in the industrial sector, such as for wastewater treatment in the leather and electroplating industries. The regenerableadsorber resin (multiple-use) demonstrates extraordinarily good chromate adsorption kinetics at high specific flow rates, thus significantly reducing the resin requirements. Compared to traditional strong base anion exchange resins, the capacity for chromium(VI) is increased by a factor of up to 2.5. Hazardous chromate is efficiently removed from wastewater with up to 100 ppm Cr(VI) as well as at very low concentrations in the ppb range, thus meeting all current regulatory requirements. Lewatit TP 107 demonstrates a high tolerance for other constituents found in water, such as sulfates. Operating costs remain attractive because the resins require fairly infrequent regeneration, thereby significantly reducing the consumption of regeneration chemicals. Following reduction, which produces harmless chromium(III), the regenerating solutions can be treated easily and safely.

Water desalination in heating installations
LANXESS developed the Lewatit NM 3367 mixed bed ion exchange resin for desalinating filling and top up water in modern water heating installations. Its particular mix ratio allows for a long operating life and highly efficient desalination. The exchange system owes its high level of efficiency to a special process for reversing the charge of the anion exchange resin used, resulting in a hydroxide ion charge of over 90 percent. With this customized mixed bed system, not only can one prevent scale formation in the water-bearing parts of a heating system, but also able to avoid corrosion in the long term. This cannot be achieved through softening alone.

Gas-tight filling of ion exchangers in Jhagadia
LANXESS has built a new filling plant for ion exchange resins in Jhagadia, India. It processes special, vacuum-sealed gas-tight bags, similar to coffee packaging. This is advantageous particularly for longer storage of highly regenerated anion exchange resins or the corresponding mixed bed filters, as it prevents pre-loading with carbon dioxide.

The new plant can also fill bags of just 12.5 liters. In this way, LANXESS offers a handy, small container especially for customers who would like to fill smaller exchange cartridges on site, for instance using Lewatit NM 3367 for heating systems.

LewaPlus now also available for CCRO systems
New functionalities have once again been added to the LANXESS proprietary simulation and design software LewaPlus, which can be used for reverse osmosis (RO) as well as for ion exchange (IX) processes or any combination of the two. A new module introduced allows the users to model systems equipped with closed circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO) technology from Desalitech, and was developed in cooperation with the company from Newton, Massachusetts. Using this software, system planners can also design RO systems based on this innovative technology. This can contribute to further improving the environmental footprint of water treatment. The existing performance algorithms and computer-based processes, CCRO module allows to quickly and precisely design RO systems that are optimally calibrated to Lewabrane elements.

LANXESS offers a comprehensive range of ion exchange resins and membrane elements tailored specifically to the above-mentioned applications and other uses. Detailed information can be found online at http://lpt.lanxess.com/en/home/

Center of Power on the Move : West to East – BY SANDEEP DEWAN

SANDEEP DEWAN, ENTREPRENEUR- COMMODITY AND FINANCIAL MARKETS, LONDON / TGN

Mumbai,  1 February,  2018 (TGN) :After World War II a number of developing countries attained independence from their former colonial rulers. One of the common claims made by leaders of independence movements was that colonialism had been responsible for perpetuating low living standards in the colonies. Thus, economic development after independence became an objective of policy not only because of the humanitarian desire to raise living standards but also because political promises had been made, and failure to make progress toward development would, it was feared, be interpreted as a failure of the independence movement. Developing countries in Latin America and elsewhere that had not been, or recently been, colonies took up the analogous belief that economic domination by the industrial countries had thwarted their development, and they, too, joined the quest for rapid growth.
Historically, Western countries have always determined developments and decision-making on the other continents. Europe almost ruled the majority of the world’s surface for over 2 centuries of the colonial era. This way of ruling slightly changed as the US gained more power, especially after the Second World War. However, this is all coming to an end. The main reason for this is economic development, which is clearly visible in Asia, especially over the last decades. Asia’s wealth has been rapidly increasing in the last few years, and China has made great improvements in this area as well. This change in wealth led to pressure on Japan and the US.
Economically speaking, the interference of the US in the Middle East possibly resulted in some crucial consequences. This meddling behaviour led to war, terrorism, and the rise of the immigrant stream to Europe. Consequently, this immigrant stream negatively impacted the entire European economy. Additionally, the economic crisis, Greece, Brexit and the situation in Ukraine are considered to be other factors that had a huge impact on the overall economy in Europe. This clearly shows the highly unstable situation in the Western world, and a country like China can make use of this. Europe and the US are relatively lacking in terms of political and economic power. It is expected that China will make a huge impact because the country counts over a billion of people.
What the world has seen in the first 2 decades of the 21st century is the recovery of Asia to its normal proportions, with more than half of the world’s population and more than half of the world’s products. This starts, of course, with Japan after the Meiji Revolution, and it continues with the smaller countries like Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia. Now it is focused on China, but it is also going to include India. India now has growth rates of 8 to 9 percent a year. We should see during the course of the 21st century Asia as a whole recovering to about what one would think would be normal proportions. That is power transition.
In contrast, India since 2014 offers the exception to an otherwise less buoyant global picture. The Indian economy has actually picked up speed over the last couple of years after dipping in 2012-13. A number of factors have contributed, including its status as a net importer of oil and other commodities (and therefore a beneficiary of lower global prices) and a new government since 2014 that has been starting to introduce more business-friendly policies to stimulate economic development and growth.
India has emerged as the fastest growing major economy in the world as per the Central Statistics Organisation (CSO) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) and it is expected to be one of the top three economic powers of the world over the next 10-15 years, backed by its strong democracy and partnerships. India’s GDP increased 7.1 per cent in 2016-17 and is expected to reach a growth rate of 7 per cent by September 2018.
n the Union Budget 2017-18, the Finance Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley, verified that the major push of the budget proposals is on growth stimulation, providing relief to the middle class, providing affordable housing, curbing black money, digitalization of the economy, enhancing transparency in political funding and simplifying the tax administration in the country. The country is expectant of various other head-strong initiatives from the center for the year 2018-19 as well.
Numerous foreign companies are setting up their facilities in India on account of various government initiatives like Make in India and Digital India. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has launched the Make in India initiative with an aim to boost the manufacturing sector of Indian economy, to increase the purchasing power of an average Indian consumer, which would further boost demand, and hence spur development, in addition to benefiting investors. The Government of India, under the Make in India initiative, is trying to give boost to the contribution made by the manufacturing sector and aims to take it up to 25 per cent of the GDP from the current 17 per cent. Besides, the Government has also come up with Digital India initiative, which focuses on three core components: creation of digital infrastructure, delivering services digitally and to increase the digital literacy.
India is expected to be the third largest consumer economy as its consumption may triple to US$ 4 trillion by 2025, owing to shift in consumer behavior and expenditure pattern, according to a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) report; and is estimated to surpass USA to become the second largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) by the year 2040, according to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
In summary, the power is shifting to the East but for east to grab this powert and reap the benefits,  many reforms and policies need to change keeping in view that global turbulence can derail the process. In the east the Dragon (China) has saturated its fire power and the Elephant ( India) is on the roll.. For India to catch this train, reforms and investment friendly policies which can eradicate poverty, reduce unemployment to lower single digit figures, eradicate corruption along with a strong central government needs to be the mantra of the day. India would need to develop a strong strategic cushion in its policies so that when global turbulences like war, major natural calamity or economic recession takes place, it should not impact India growth train.

LANXESS “High-quality products for leather manufacturing”

Chennai, 2 February, 2018 (TGN) – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS presented its comprehensive range of leather chemical products at the India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai, India. On an exhibition space covering 135 square meters the Leather business unit showcased its extensive portfolio for manufacturing leathers for the footwear, clothing, furniture and automotive industries. This included mineral and synthetic tanning agents, preservatives, retanning and softening technologies, dyes and numerous finishing and upgrading products.
In addition to articles such as shoes, bags and garments, which demonstrate the versatility of leather in application and processing, LANXESS also presented a model of a unique on-site manufacturing to create value from by-products directly in the tannery. Another highlight of the trade fair was a presentation of innovative and patented technologies for the production of water-repellent through to waterproof leather.
“LANXESS not only offers a unique combination of state-of-the-art technologies from its own research, but also innovative retanning systems that enhance the quality of the end products. In combination with our worldwide, competent technical support, customers are able to process hides and skins into high-quality leathers,” says Dr. Thomas Brackemeyer, head of the Organic Leather Chemicals business line in the LANXESS’s Leather business unit.
Innovative retanning technologies
Fluctuating test results often lead to tanners using higher quantities of waterproofing chemicals than necessary to give a “margin of safety” above demanding specifications. Traditional waterproofing chemicals are based on fatliquoring agents, which means that offering excessive amounts causes other problems such as excessive softening of the leather. This increase in softness needs to be compensated, for example by adding more retanning agents. This in turn can increase the hydrophilic character, which needs to be compensated by adding more waterproofing agents, and so on.
With the correct beamhouse and wet blue processing and using fatliquor-free chemicals the waterproof performance can be optimized leading to savings in both time and costs. For this purpose, LANXESS’s portfolio comprises Levotan W and Levotan WRP which are both completely 100 percent fatliquor-free.
Waterproof with Levotan W
Levotan W is a patented functionalized silicone containing microemulsion. It can be used, with Levotan WRP, to manufacture all types of leather requiring waterproofing especially upper leather for example hiking boots and golf shoes but with high water vapor permeability, which translates into greater wear comfort. Leather made with this product displays a fine tight grain, light weight and a natural feel. Levotan W also yields high and reproducible results in Bally and Maeser dynamic tests as well as static water absorption. It offers high stability and avoids the risk of premature precipitation due to low pH, hard water or other electrolytes present in retanning, eliminating the risk of staining.
The system gives excellent dyeing properties, including a high level of color uniformity – across different batches and all kinds of hides and skins. The dyeing between flesh and grain is tone-in-tone, making it ideal for all types of waterproof leather, including nubuck.
Levotan WRP for medium to firm leather
Levotan WRP offers excellent product stability, even in cold water. It is indispensable for medium to firm leather and is even suitable for military applications articles with a tight grain. Even with relatively high application rates, the leather does not soften significantly. Levotan WRP has a very good penetration and distribution. Furthermore, an excellent, uniform dyeability is achieved. The treated leathers are characterized by a high filling, fastness and resistance to migration.
Unique on-site manufacturing plant for the production of X-Biomer retanning agent
The Leather business unit at LANXESS has developed a production plant in cooperation with the Leverkusen-based research institute INVITE, with the aim of producing X-Biomer retanning agents from collagen-rich by-products that accumulate during leather-making and from organic biomass. The plant features a modular design and is intended for use directly on site and in place at tanneries. The practical tests are currently being conducted at the HELLER-LEDER tannery. A model of the plant is displayed on the LANXESS booth.
Patent leather is becoming increasingly popular
Patent leather is very trendy. LANXESS offers a range of new products for its production:

Baygen Compact HC EXP 2195 has a very good covering power, good fullness and low tackiness at stacking and during plating, together with very good adhesion and flex performance.
Baygen Hardener EH EXP 2205 is a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent for patent leather formulations in organic solvents imparting good flow and fastness properties. The product is specially designed for easy handling and for the use in combination with
Baygen TOP U 01 at an application ratio of 1:1. Such combination does not require the addition of any solvents for the application.
Bayderm X-TRA Gloss EXP 2246 is an aliphatic polyurethane dispersion used as a gloss component in aqueous patent and patent-like top coat systems. The product is commonly used as a sole binder in combination with suitable crosslinking agents and auxiliaries. Bayderm X-TRA Gloss EXP 2246 produces high gloss finishes with excellent transparency and very good physical properties.

SMSSL - NAKHWA builds India's first ever "Surimi Benefication project" to provide employment to the natives and foreign currency to the nation.

In Center Shri Keshav Budhaji Koli with his grandson Mr. Sunny  @ SMSSL - NAKHWA / TGN.
MUMBAI, 4 January, 2018 (TGN) / By Sachin Murdeshwar :  Konkan is a beautiful dream that happened to the land of Maharashtra. Blessed with nature's marvelous beauty, Konkan has Koli Agri brother as it's native. With a coastline of around 720 kms, the sea offers a treasure of various diverse species of fishes. Taking boats in deep sea water for fishing and earning livelihood is the traditional business of a Konkani man. Basically a konkani man is very determined possessing immense self confidence. These qualities make him very competitive and challenging in terms of completing the tasks undertaken by him. On grounds of these qualities, perseverance and  hard work, Mr. Keshav Budhaji Koli aka Nakhavaji, a native of Mauje kanthavali from Uran taluka of Raigad district stepped into the business of fishing 25 years ago and succeeded to launch Sasoon Dock Fisheries Cooperative society in Uran taluka.
Located at around 55 kms from Mumbai, Kanthavali Dighoda is a village in the Raigad district where Shri Keshav Koli Naqwa stared his fishing business in the creek there. Keshav Koli Nakhwa, who was deprived of primary education due to financial circumstances, in 2000, under the guidance of his friend Latif Maldar, the then Agriculture Minister Shri. Sharad Pawar provided financial help for the mechanized boats for fishing business, and with the help of 37 mechanical boats, they launched fishing and the processing industry of different types of fish at the same time. Through this enterprise he provided employment to various natives of his village. This business was a huge success fetching profit of crores to the company. Meanwhile, Sasoon Dock Fishery Co-operative Society was established in the year 1993-94from Keshavji's initiative. In order to get a permanent source of income to the members of the society, Government of Maharashtra had decided to form a group of members for the construction of mechanized fishing boats under the scheme of National Cooperative Development Corporation and to provide financial support to them. And accordingly, under the same scheme,  the member groups got a financial assistance of 15 lakh rupees for the sustainance of their Fisheries business.
On the journey of fishing boats in deep sea, the problem of diesel was created.  In addition, the need for ice to retain the fishes in the sea was also realised. To resolve these problems, Keshavji arranged for diesel distribution through other companies' diesel pumps at Sasoon Dock. Also there were frequent difficulties for getting the right quality weighed and cost-effective ice from the ice factories outside Mumbai. Hence Keshavji opened an ice factory and cold storage facility in Dighoda village.
Keshavji started the fish processing industry since 2007, keeping in mind the objective of expanding the fisheries business. For the first time in the country's co-operative sector, the 57-ton capacity machinery and 1200 tonne cold storage project was setup. And through this same project, export of sea prawns, cattle fish, surmai, promphet and fin fish to 32 different countries including China, Thailand, Indonesia, New York, Japan and Malaysia became possible from the  Raigad district of Maharashtra which helped our nation earn foreign currency ,this goes to the credit of Keshavjis hardwork and perseverance.
After the success of the last 25 years of fishing and fish processing industry, the Sasoon dock company has again taken a new leap. Recently, 'Surimi Benefication project' has been launched in Dighoda village at the auspices of the company's Silver Jubliee. Under the Union Agriculture ministry the National Cooperative Development Corporation New Delhi and Goverment of Maharashtra's combined funding 100% export promotiinal " Surmai Benefication project" was inaugurated at Kanthali Dighoda with an annual capacity of 5000 Metric Tonnes .
Surmai is a very good source of proteins in ones meal. This is an ambitious project of this organization. Through this ambitious project the flesh of the fish is scientifically processed and it is exported in large quantities to various countries. Of course, through this project, the newly acquired Agri Koli has got employment and the country is also experiencing a flow of foreign currency within the country.
Keshav Nakhawa, who has been able to foster fishing, as a sailor from  a small village  is a proud role model for every new businessman who is excited about the fish industry and is doing something new in the field of fisheries.ENDS

Human Rights and Legal Resources Platform
Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), a collective legal rights initiative born in 2002 to ensure transparency and accountability to a failing criminal justice system, is now expanding into a full-fledged human rights and legal resources platform. CJP, that has always been advocating the rights of oppressed religious minorities and especially victims and survivors of communal violence, will now also engage in advocacy for the rights of Adivasis, Dalits, Women, Children as well as the LGBTQIA community. As a part of its revamp, CJP is also launching a new power packed website in the occasion of Constitution Day on November 26.

Believing that justice must be the threshold for lasting peace and harmony, through its rigorous 15 year journey, CJP has amassed a wealth of experience and expertise in negotiating the justice system and in promoting advocacy related to Criminal Justice System (CJS) reform, be it witness protection, independence in investigation and prosecution and time bound trials. “Today, defending the Constitutional fundamentals on which India was founded is critical to India’s survival as a vibrant and representative democracy,” says Teesta Setalvad, Co-founder and Secretary, CJP.
The group is building new synergies in civil society by engaging with human rights defenders from different backgrounds. “Under the present dispensation, the right of free expression, the land rights of forest workers and Adivasis, the basic rights of Dalits and all minorities are under attack. These are all important focus areas of our initiative,” explains Setalvad.
Citizens for Justice and Peace is also looking to highlight the importance of understanding intersectionality in human rights issues and building lasting alliances. “The time has come for all those working on issues of human needs, rights and dignity to stand up for each other in a one, vibrant citizen’s voice. Rights of all Women, Children and the LGBTQIA are all important pillars of this struggle,” she asserts.
CJP has already amassed support from several prominent civil society members who have witnessed first-hand the work done by the organisation so far. The website launch is expected to be a star-studded affair with prominent personalities from the fields of law, art, cinema, journalism and literature endorsing CJP via personal videos and blogs, coming together for a common vision.

Renowned as the pharmacy of the world, the Indian pharma economy has been lauded for its rapid growth in recent decades. This has cooled down in recent years, but the industry is again growing strongly. Compounded annual growth is 17.6%; Indian pharma is expected to be worth 55 billion USD by 2020. In line with this, the life science sector in India is also expected to employ close to 3.5 million people by 2022, a 100% increase in under a decade. The Indian pharma industry owes its success to its bold, ambitious approach, history of innovative and an ability to constantly adapt to the dynamic global market.
Over the past five years, India has become the leading API and finished dose drug exporter to the Western markets and has rapidly moved up the pharmaceutical value chain. Drug approvals given by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to Indian companies have nearly doubled from 109 (2014-2015) to 201 (2015-2016), stimulating further growth in exports to the United States and Western economies. Additionally, the Indian government is now providing more support working hand-in-hand with its businesses to develop incentives to further boost growth.
More generally, the country is now rapidly emerging as a major contributor across the pharma supply chain from R&D through to generics.
Speaking at the inauguration of CPhI & P-MEC India 2017, Mr. Yogesh Mudras, Managing Director, UBM India said, “India is among the fastest-growing pharmaceutical markets in the world and has established itself as a global manufacturing and research hub. A large raw material base and the availability of a skilled workforce give the industry a definite competitive advantage over other countries. A platform like CPhI & P-MEC India provides a most comprehensive industry platform for every company that deals with pharmaceuticals in India. This year too, we have the expo held at two venues, commencing at BKC today. CPhI and P-MEC India is widely used as a barometer of Pharma’s overall health in India. Being the only platform that brings together Indian and global companies, the mammoth expo is a strong event reflecting and enhancing the value of the prosperous pharma industry.”ENDS.
